Reference: Brunialti, American Costume Jewelry - Art and Industry (2008) Vol 2 p 240. Patent is reproduced below (scroll down); designer A Philippe, filed 29 June, granted 6 Aug 1940. In June 1940, the island of Malta, a British base, was under attack by the Italian Air Force. It was defended by three Gloster Gladiator Aircraft named Faith, Hope, and Charity. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Far_Fighter_Flight (Malta remained unoccupied in WW2). The application date for the patent coincides with these events.
